Today I had a nice chat with a guy who had just delivered a new dishwasher to my Dads house and it was all very "Isnt it a beautiful day?" and "Have a great day!" which I sort of like. We could do with a bit of that in Britain sometimes, I think.
Anyhoo, as the conversation drew to a close he said
"So you guys are from where? Canada or Sweden or some place like that?"
Now you'll have to take my word that my accent is neither Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins nor is it Tony Blair but even so my Midlands neutrality accent sounds ENGLISH??!!
Still, he was a nice guy.

I lived in the US for a while and was once asked what part of Australia I came from. I said, 'oh, about a hundred miles or so north of London'. The guy looks at me and says, 'But London isn't in Australia' to which I replied, 'I know, I'm not Australian'.
Another time some daft American girl begged me to say something to her as she loved the English accent. I don't think she was too happy when I said, 'f*ck off you stupid cow'.

Living and working in America I came in for some stick now and then and found what really upsets them is getting on the subject of wars and asking them what their home/away stats are. Also the nationality of their first president. One poor chap decided to rib me about the royal family and asked me what it was like living in a country run by a woman? I said it wasn't too bad then asked him what it's like living in a country run by a second rate B movie cowboy? (Ronald Reagan)
some more funny one's were asking them what language they spoke, what nationality are you, tell me how baseball came about...the list goes on and on.

Wore a GIAB t shirt with the small modest logo on the left side, and the bloke in the next euro camp shed/ chalet admitted that he was concerned iwas a religious fanatic, ready to convert him. Instead I played him some music to explain!

Now heres a funny thing. Me and the wife were getting steadily sloshed last night at Applebees when we were asked to leave as we'd drunk the most we were allowed. It was only 10 O'clock but apparently after three drinks a supervisor will casually walk past to see what state you're in and then if you get to eight drinks they ask you to take your cheque and wont serve you anymore.
They were very polite about it and there seemed no point getting shirty about it (as that would've made their point for them) but it seemed bizarre.
Anyway, we nipped into Safeway and bought some Jack and Coke and carried on when we got home.

It's their silly sue everyone for everything attitude. If you were to fall over because you were so drunk and they provided you with the booze...guess who's fault it is?
I remember hearing about one guy suing a drill company because he'd stuck a drill up his nose, switched it on and ripped his nose apart. His case was that the safety instructions didn't say he shouldn't stick it up his nose and turn it on.

Meet a dumb person from (insert nationality) = all people from (insert nationality) are dumb. Generalisms rule.
Having lived here in the mid-west and worked also in NY, CT and FL quite a bit, yes, they're not living the life we Brits know and apparently love (yes many Brits complain how the country is going down the pan, but staunchly defend it to foreign gentlemen and ladies).
There's a lot of stupid stuff here in the US; there's a lot of stupid stuff there in the UK. It's just horses for courses. Personally my quality of life increased when I moved here and I really can't complain about how things have turned out. Equally, I get narked off by the racism, living stereotypes and how life revolves around amassing personal wealth, that to get decent healthcare you need to financially support it, that people think drink driving is OK, and the obvious corruption. But you know what, I chose to live here and I don't regret it. I have met some very clever Americans and some very naive ones. But I did when I lived in the UK (Brits, that is, not Americans)
@Daddycoops - Not sure where you were but here in Chicago you can get fall down stupid and they'll serve you. The one thing you don't do here is bad mouth the city cops - they will beat your ass. Or is it arse? :)
.:Paul:.
p.s. anecdotally my other US based Brit friends tell me they all miss Chicago, so maybe I lucked out with a great city - yea - even with our ridiculously high property taxes and some of the countries highest murder rates. |

The sign says Dungeon, which basically means the banter zone. If you're being taken in by what you read I have a signed copy of Jokerman here for you.
I loved living in America and it was only circumstances that made me return, or I would still be there. I would have to say there are more dumb feckers on this side of the pond than where I was.

Arizona, specifically just south of Phoenix. Personally, I loved the place and the people. The wife has close ties to her family so she'd never move but, me, I've no-one really so if I were a younger (single) man Id be over there already.
