So who's heard the whole shebang?
Got my copy of Rare Cult on Saturday after years of trying to find it for less than a a ton.....
Is it better than Electric? Or just a poor attempt at re-emulating "Love"?
Opinions please.

Both.
Love is in my all time top 5 albums (stop laughing yer b**tards) & as a teenager I could barely wait for the follow up. Me & a mate scored tickets for Bradford St Georges Hall on the Electric tour, before buying the album. I remember thinking "Why are they playing all the old classics in a MTV cock rock style?"
Then it got worse.....I bought Electric & sweet Jesus, I could have cried. All Billys pristine guitar work had gone through the ACDC filter & as for Ians Baby, baby, baby nonsense 
On the other hand the Peace demos are a bit of a no mans land. Definitely better than the Electric versions IMO but as you point out, a poor attempt at clinging onto bits of the Love sound, while not quite working. I suppose if you like pretty bland heavy metal then the Electric versions are probably the Cult at their best but I imagine most 84/85 Cult fans found it a very poor follow up. |

Hmmm, tough one. It was a brave, and career changing move, to rerecord with Rubin which paid off commercially. I cant lie as I loved Electric and played it death when it came out but the B sides of the singles (Zap city, love trooper, conquisatador et al) alluded to something more. I got Rare Cult about 9/10 years back and couldnt wait to hear Peace. But I was left underwhelmed...personally the best combo of this period would have been the inclusion of the B sides onto the album at the expense of born to be wild and Memphis hip shake.

Have had a love-hate relationship with the Cult since forever.... When I was in 6th form, "Dreamtime" was always on the common room tape player, along with DMs "Black Celebration" and I just didn't get it. I've always liked more pop-orientated stuff so was more into U2 and REM at the time. I loved "Love" when it came out tough and had to eat a lot of humble pie in 85-6, when I also had to admit to liking "First Last and Always" when I'd been telling everyone for years that the Sisters were shit. (Thanks for that Hussey!)
1987 I was still on peanuts allowance so had to choose between the Mission at Sheffield City Hall or the Cult the same place the day before. Since the girl I was trying to hook up with had a similar predicament and had chosen the Mission - I did the same (Btw it paid off).
When I heard "Electric" and saw the Brixton TV broadcast I realised I'd made the right choice and lamented what "Peace" would have been.
Some years later when I'd got past the "Billy Duffy should really stop trying to cop off with my woman" phase and that relationship was ancient history - I got a second-hand vinyl copy of Electric as part of a package deal, put it on my first decent turntable and I suddenly realized that it was a lot better than I remembered it. I'd clearly not been playing it loud enough on a good enough system.
Love it to death now - except that diabolical Steppenwolf cover.
As for "Peace" - it is what I expected and hoped it would be. But my tastes have changed - the harder stuff works better on "Electric". But there are still moments where you miss the kaleidoscope guitars and layering - especially stuff like "Electric Ocean" is better on "Peace". And the original "Wild Flower" is like a different song - can play that forever.
At the moment side one of "Electric" is the record I use to gauge whether adjustments to my system are better or worse. Listening to it again this morning after playing "Peace" all week and changing the drive belt on my Planar 3, it sent goosebumps down my spine. That's always a good sign.
Put my vinyl copy of "Love" on afterwards - and realised that I have a very good turntable indeed. It blew the CD away.
(Sonic Temple and Ceremony are dire but the stuff after that I quite like).

I think it has too much gratuitous swearing in one of the tracks (and not that I'm the sensitive type - it just seems to dumb it down). But yes generally it's one of their more underrated pieces of work. And ahead of its time too.

The Saturday I received this was also the day the Cult/Mission dates got leaked to me. Typical Mish syncronicity which seems to have followed me my whole life.
